Cape Town β The senior Hawks official who was arrested on Wednesday for attempting to bribe a police officer who was investigating a corruption case, was released on R10 000 bail.
Brigadier Motakane Mapome (54), from Pretoria, made his first appearance in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday where he faced one charge of corruption. He was released on R10 000 bail, TimesLIVE reported.
“It is alleged that in January 2022, the accused came to Bela-Bela and offered a promotion to a police colonel and also offered to assist him to obtain tenders in exchange for him (police official) destroying evidence in a case of tender corruption which he was investigating,β Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said.
The NPA said his case was postponed to 26 March 2025 pending further investigations.

In a statement yesterday, police confirmed Mapome’s arrest and said he allegedly offered to use his connections at the Hawksβ Head Office in an attempt to secure a promotion for the complainant if he supported him.
βThe Hawks remain committed to upholding the law and maintaining the highest standards of integrity and accountability. No one, regardless of their position or rank within the Directorate, will be allowed to undermine our core values or the trust the public places in us,β Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale said.
The National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, said the arrest of a senior official showed the Directorateβs zero-tolerance stance towards corruption.
