Zuma demands ANC membership reinstatement, calls expulsion ‘unlawful’

Cape Town – Former President Jacob Zuma has demanded the reinstatement of his ANC membership, claiming his expulsion was unlawful.

According to reports, Zuma’s lawyers have sent a letter to ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, asserting that the expulsion violated both the ANC Constitution and the Constitution of South Africa.

“We are instructed to inform you that the aforesaid expulsion was illegal and/or in breach of both the ANC Constitution and/or the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa for various grounds,” his lawyers KMNS Attorney’s argued.

Zuma requested a detailed ruling from the national disciplinary committee and appealed bodies that ruled against him, demanding access to the complete records of their proceedings, including any outstanding documents and correspondence.
He warned that he would pursue legal action if the ANC did not overturn its expulsion decision by January 31.

“Failure to comply on or before January 31 will result in our client taking all the legal steps necessary to vindicate, inter alia, his violated rights in respect of all the afore going issues, without any further notice to the ANC.

“Such steps may entail approaching the courts for appropriate relief, including seeking an order for the immediate reinstatement of President Zuma’s membership of the ANC, and punitive costs,” the letter read.

The conflict centers around Zuma’s support for the MK party, which played a role in the ANC’s diminished performance in the latest elections.

Zuma had been a member of the ANC for more than six decades.
