Cape Town — Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s visit to a family home in Khayelitsha took an unexpected turn when his security team reportedly became embroiled in a confrontation with a resident.
Mashatile was in Cape Town as part of the African National Congress’ (ANC) engagement efforts ahead of its 113th-anniversary celebrations this week.
Reports indicated that the ANC has been striving to regain control of the Western Cape, which it lost to the DA in 2009. As part of its outreach, the party has been engaging with communities to demonstrate its commitment to addressing local concerns.
However, during a visit to a residential home in Khayelitsha, tensions flared when a man demanded that Mashatile and his security team leave his mother’s house immediately.
Carrying a distressed toddler in his arms, the man was heard shouting, “All of you must leave now! Leave my mother’s house immediately!” He was eventually escorted out of the house as security personnel attempted to de-escalate the situation.

Despite the altercation, Mashatile remained at the home to hear the family’s grievances about life in the area, The Citizen reported.
He also extended an apology to the man for the incident, emphasising the importance of addressing community concerns.
Mashatile was reportedly unharmed during the incident, which highlighted the challenges the ANC faces in reconnecting with communities in the Western Cape.
