Cape Town – A 29-year-old police constable stationed at Gelvandale SAPS was fatally shot while on duty on December 31, 2024. The incident occurred in Kobus Road, Helenvale, around 17:35 during routine patrols.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, two officers were conducting patrols when their vehicle broke down.
As the officers attempted to restart the vehicle, three community members offered assistance. Moments later, a gunshot was heard.
“The driver heard a shot being fired, and on inspection, he discovered that the Constable had been shot in the head. He was taken to hospital where he later died.
“The firearm of the deceased constable was also missing. An investigation is underway, and no arrests have been made,” said Mawisa.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene expressed deep sorrow over the loss, condemning the killing of an officer dedicated to public safety.
She called on the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
