Cape Town – The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has called for racism to be criminalised in South Africa following a viral video showing a black woman accusing a white couple of calling her a “baboon” at a Fourways shop.
The video shared on Sunday, captures a black woman alleging that a white couple referred to her as a baboon.
This incident happened at Food Lover’s Market in Fourways today.

ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona highlighted the persistence of racism in various sectors and its threat to the country’s progress over 30 years of democracy, urging for its criminalisation.
“This dehumanising act is not merely an isolated case of individual prejudice; it reflects a pervasive culture of racism that continues to undermine our democracy and societal unity,” Ntshona said.

“Racism in this country is a persistent issue, with incidents occurring in schools, universities, and communities.”
“We call for the criminalisation of racism in South Africa… Every incident of racism chips away at the foundations of democracy and inclusivity that we have fought so hard to establish.”
The Patriotic Alliance (PA) also condemned the incident, with Deputy President Kenny Kunene saying it will be reported to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
