Cape Town — The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has condemned the tragic incident of gender-based violence (GBV) after Sibusiso Lawrence admitted to killing his girlfriend, shortly before he allegedly hung himself.
In a shocking video that circulated on social media, Lawrence, with a bloodied face and shirt, confessed that he killed his girlfriend after she left him despite everything he had done for her to make her happy.
Police discovered her lifeless body lying in the middle of a gravel road in Malangeni in Umzinto. In contrast, Lawrence’s body was found hanging from a tree, not far from his girlfriend’s body.

In a statement, Mchunu expressed his concerns over the tragedy including the posting of the video and picture of the lifeless body.
“This shocking incident is a grim reminder of the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) in our society. Such acts of violence are a betrayal of our shared humanity and have no place in our nation. Furthermore, using social media to amplify such cruelty is utterly unacceptable and reflects a disregard for basic decency and the dignity of others,” Mchunu said.
He said the fact that Lawrence took his own life has ended the legal pursuit of justice but does not diminish the severity of his actions or the pain caused to the victim’s family and friends. He extended his condolences to the family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim and reaffirm the government’s commitment to intensifying efforts to create a society where women and children can live free from fear,” he concluded.
