Cape Town – An inmate at the Mangaung Correctional Centre died by suicide on Sunday, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed, according to reports.
The inmate’s personal details are being withheld while the family is notified, IOL reported on Sunday.
“The Department of Correctional Service confirm with regret the death of an inmate who was found to have taken his own life by hanging,” the report quoted department as saying.
It added: “We appeal for patience and understanding as we ensure that the proper procedures are followed with due respect to the family’s privacy.”
The Mangaung Correctional Centre is the prison where convicted killer and rapist Thabo Bester escaped on May 3, 2022, by faking his death with the help of prison staff, burning a body in his cell to stage a suicide.
