Cape Town – South Africa recorded a decline in several contact crimes, including murder and rape, between July and September, as revealed by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu during the release of the 2024/2025 second-quarter crime statistics on Monday.
Key highlights include:
- Murder dropped by 5.8%, rape by 3.1%, and sexual offences by 2.5%.
- Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 8.8%, while residential and non-residential robberies fell by 1.3% and 21.1%, respectively.
- Property-related crimes saw a 9.9% decline, and overall community-reported serious crimes reduced by 5.1%.
Despite these improvements, Mchunu emphasised the need for intensified law enforcement, prevention measures, and community involvement, citing gaps in crime intelligence, technology, and forensics.
He also reflected on the police’s achievements and challenges during his first 100 days in office and since the start of the seventh administration.
