Cape Town – A batch of the birth control pill YazPlus has been pulled from circulation by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahra).
eNCA reports that Sahra is recalling Batch number WEW96J owing to an incorrect tablet format. The faulty pack includes 24 inactive pills and four hormone tablets, instead of 24 hormone tablets and four inactive pills. That means pills from this specific batch would not protect women against pregnancies.
The manufacturer Bayer said users of the affected batch should stop immediately and seek medical advice. It said the reason for the mix-up had been identified and corrected, according to the BBC.
Bayer Ltd’s recall notice says: “While only a limited number of packs from the respective batch is affected, as a precautionary measure, no tablets from these packs shall be used until you have consulted your healthcare practitioner, as they may potentially not provide the contraceptive protection you expect.”
Urgent- if you have #YazPlus at home, take it back to the pharmacy with this letter. It’s been recalled due to concern about whether it’s effective as contraception. #consumerprotection pic.twitter.com/UOEvezUC3i
