Cape Town – Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga has confirmed her commitment to delivering 750 new houses to military veterans, in addition to the 1,095 already provided.
Motshekga was addressing questions in Parliament on Tuesday, regarding her department’s commitment, pledged in July, to deliver 750 houses to military veterans over the next three years as part of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
She addressed challenges, including delays in updating the veteran database and issues with underfunding.
“The mechanism that is in place is that the delivery of houses is monitored as follows: There is a recovery plan from the Department of Human Settlements that will fast-track the delivery of houses to these veterans.
“There are also mechanisms in place to strengthen the housing project monitored for all provinces,” Motshekga.
She said that coordination with provincial and local governments is ongoing to ensure these veterans are prioritised for housing.
Motshekga acknowledged the struggle veterans face due to administrative setbacks and emphasised the importance of rectifying these issues, though inheritance plans for deceased veterans’ families remain undecided.
