Cape Town – A French woman who allegedly threw her dog from a third-floor balcony at OR Tambo International Airport is currently in a health facility, according to police.
Authorities are waiting for medical clearance to proceed with taking her statement.
“The police are awaiting advice from medical experts on when they can proceed to take down her statement,” IOL quoted National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe as saying.
The incident that took place in the early hours of Friday led to the dog’s severe injuries, resulting in its euthanasia.
According to NSPCA Chief Operations Officer, Grace de Lange, theFrench woman was travelling from France to Johannesburg and was making her way to Brazil. She was travelling with her dog as an extra “passenger”.
“At approximately 03:30 am on the morning of 8 November 2024, video footage from the Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) shows the woman strolling through the Atrium at OR Tambo International Airport, with her small black dog running freely. As the dog reaches her, the woman picks the dog up and callously throws it over the balcony railing,” NSPCA Chief Operations Officer Grace de Lange said in a statement.
The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) condemned the act and vowed to seek justice, while investigations remain ongoing.
