Cape Town – Despite recent defections of high-profile members, including Dali Mpofu, EFF leader Julius Malema remains confident the party will endure.
Mpofu, a founding supporter, joined the MK Party, citing a desire for “black and progressive unity”.
In an exclusive interview with SABC News, Mpofu discussed his reasons for the move.
“After a lot of soul searching, I’ve taken a decision that I will be joining MK. I’m joining MK because I believe that is the vehicle through which we will achieve the much-needed black and progressive unity so I’m doing so not necessarily to reject any other organisation but at this point in time, in November 2024, I am of the view that the vehicle through which we should drive that unity is uMkhonto we Sizwe,” he said.
This shift has fueled rivalry between the EFF and MK Party, especially after MK surpassed the EFF in national election votes.
On Thursday, Malema issued a veiled assurance to EFF supporters.
He posted on the social media platform X, saying that the EFF “will remain standing” and “is not going anywhere under a criminal syndicate,” which appears to be a reference to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

“To prevent any potential hurt, it’s crucial to heed the guidance of the leadership. We remain standing and are not going anywhere under a criminal syndicate,” Malema wrote.
With its elective conference approaching, the EFF is likely to use the event to reassess strategy, as Malema seeks to reaffirm his influence.
The upcoming National People’s Assembly in December will proceed without several senior leaders following a wave of exits from the party.
