Cape Town — Following the conclusion of the 30th South African Music Awards (SAMAs) celebrated some of South Africa’s biggest music stars at the Gallagher Convention Centre this past weekend.
With 33 awards up for grabs on the night, Tyla, Kabza De Small and Mthunzi were the biggest winners of the night, with Tyla scooping four awards on the night, making her the biggest winner.
She won the award for Female Artist of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Album for her self-titled debut album, ‘Tyla”, while she also walked away with the International Achievement Award.
Despite Tyla’s success on the night, she missed out on two of the biggest awards on offer at the SAMAs, which were Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Those two prizes were scooped up by Kabza De Small’s album, Isimo, and Mthandeni SK’s hit song featuring Lwah Ndlunkulu – Paris, The South African reported.
South African music fans and stars praised Tyla for her wins on the night, while Kabza De Small and Mthandeni SK received their flowers for their impressive wins and performances throughout the music year.
Depsite Tyla’s Water being one of the biggest hits of 2024, she missed out on the award for Record of the Year, and one person who did not take kindly to this was South African rapper, Cassper Nyovest.
He took to X and expressed his surprise that Tyla missed out on the award, despite her song winning the award for the first-ever Best African Performance at the Grammys.
“No ways. Tyla won a Grammy for Water bro, but she didn’t get the Sama for Record of the Year at home? Haha, y’all are playing games,” he wrote,
While some agreed with Cassper that Tyla deserved the award, others felt that her music was not for South Africans but rather for American and international audiences.
Take a look at the reactions below:

She could have been cheated locally… that’s possible… HOWEVER…
…We cannot & should not benchmark American success to automatically mean South African success.
The masses of SA consume music differently than Americans, especially amaPiano, Gospel & Maskandi.

No because you won a Grammy is not a reason to win a SAMA!
