Cape Town — The Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) Department of Education confirmed the tragic death of a male matric learner from Mbonambi Secondary School.
In a statement, the Department said the young man died after he was hit by a train. The South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Forensic Team were on hand to retrieve the body for identification.
“Officials from the King Cetshwayo District paid a visit to the school on Sunday 3 November, where full trauma and counselling support were offered to the learners,” Department spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi said.
The Department’s Special Needs Services was on hand to monitor the Matric exams for Monday 4 November and give support to any learners who experience trauma and anxiety.
KZN MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka, extended his condolences to the family, friends, learners and staff of the school.
“I encourage learners to take all necessary precautions and safety measures at all times. As a department, we are shocked and saddened by this tragic loss of our grade 12 Learners during the 3rd week of the National Senior Certificate Examinations,” Hlomuka said.
