Cape Town – The mother and young brother of a 10-year-old girl who passed away after allegedly eating snacks from a spaza shop in Alexandra, Johannesburg, are reportedly fighting for their lives in hospital.
Reports indicated on Sunday that the girl, Lesedi Maaboi, experienced severe symptoms soon after eating the snack.
“My daughter came from a toilet complaining about chest pains, we took her to Masakhane clinic and on the way, she was unable to breathe. When we got to the clinic, I dropped her off in the emergency room. We were called after some minutes to be informed of her passing.
“While still there, their mother complained about stomach pains. She was admitted and I called a neighbour to assist in transporting my four -year-old boy whom we left home so that he could get medical attention.
They were both taken to Edenvale Hospital. Their mother is in critical condition,” Times Live quoted the child’s father as saying.
Maria, the mother, learned of her daughter’s death before being transferred to the ICU at Edenvale Hospital, where she and her younger son, Refentse, remain in critical condition, EWN reported.
The incident has fueled community outrage in Alexandra, with residents attempting to loot and burn the spaza shop where the snacks were allegedly bought.
The shop owner’s whereabouts are unknown, and police have launched an investigation, the report said.
