Cape Town – Leader of the MK Party Jacob Zuma has alleged that Western countries deliberately weakened the ANC to necessitate coalition governance.
He claimed secret discussions led to South Africa’s early negotiations, with Western powers fearing communist influence if apartheid collapsed without a settlement.
Speaking at the Sisulu Foundation for Social Justice event last week, Zuma criticised recent party fragmentation, arguing that an increase in small parties harms majority rule.

“We are separating ourselves every day, I don’t know how many political parties we have, what will they help us with? The more political parties we have, the more the majority reduces from us,” Zuma said.
He honoured the Sisulus and other ANC leaders who were jailed and fought for South Africa’s freedom.
Zuma criticised the current ANC leadership as “weak” and claimed that the Western nations aimed to weaken the party, which he believes has veered from its original mission.

“Indeed, today the organisation which they wanted to be weak in 30 years is weak. It is weak now, not just weak but almost moved off the route that it was given,” he said.
Reflecting on the 1994 Government of National Unity (GNU), he argued that it united South Africans meaningfully, contrasting it with today’s GNU, which he sees as ineffective.
“The current one does not mean anything. There was a difference in the thinking then because we were saying South Africans must now unite, come together, and work together.

“That is what we have been doing in the last 30 years,” he said.
Although the Sisulus were members of the ANC, the party did not attend the foundation’s launch event.
Zuma, expelled from the ANC for founding the MK Party, plans to contest his expulsion.
