Cape Town – A Cape Town man was arrested for animal cruelty after having his four-month-old American bully puppy’s ears cropped at home.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA initiated an investigation after receiving reports that the puppy, initially with intact ears, had undergone the procedure days later.
“This case emerged from the Edgemead community, where residents reported seeing the four-month-old puppy named Troy with intact ears and then with his ears removed just days later.
“Inspector Werner Taljaard spearheaded the investigation into this cruel act.
“Through diligent inquiry, the owner admitted to hiring a third party for R3500 to perform the ear cropping in his home.
“The owner informed Inspector Taljaard that the procedure took place in his entertainment room and lasted about an hour,” SPCA said.
The SPCA said that ear cropping and tail docking are illegal and constitute a criminal offense under the Animals Protection Act, which prohibits causing permanent harm to animals.
Following the incident, the puppy was taken for a veterinary examination, while the owner was detained at Bothasig police station.
SPCA chief inspector Jaco Pieterse stated that those who violate animal welfare laws will face legal consequences.
