Cape Town – Nearly three years after Len Cloete was shot in the head by a police officer during a confrontation at a hotel in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, no charges have been filed, a report said on Sunday.
The 2021 incident, which went viral on social media, In an interview with the television broadcasting channel eNCA in 2021, Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said the incident, which went viral on social media, started when the man was involved in an argument with members of the staff at the lodge.
Cloete allegedly became aggressive, leading to a police intervention.
In the video, Cloete could seen disarming a police officer before another officer shot him in the head.
According to IOL, despite sustaining brain damage, Cloete’s health had improved, though he remained in a wheelchair and had limited speech.
“He will never be the same person that he was. Len is able to speak simple words like yes and no. He is able to show emotion and can get very emotionally attached to situations,” the reort quoted Lead investigator at SSS Security Services Luke Enslin as saying.
Investigations into the case by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) and police were still ongoing, with one report yet to be completed, the report said.
Legal experts and human rights advocates criticise the delay, citing systemic issues and high case backlogs.
The case remained unresolved, pending a decision from the National Prosecuting Authority, said the report.
