Cape Town — Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Carl Niehaus, has not minced his words following Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s highly-publicised switch to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
The MK Party announced that Mkhwebane would serve as the party’s convenor in Mpumalanga and was unveiled as such during a party briefing on Friday.
The former public protector joined the EFF in October 2023 and her move to the party may have come at the wrong time as it struggled during the 2024 general elections, only receiving the 4th-highest amount of votes nationally, falling behind the MK Party.
She announced her resignation from the EFF last week, a year to the day she joined, and claimed the reason behind the move was to spend more time with her family, and while she was grateful tot he party for its support, she grew disillusioned with the current political state in South Africa.

Mkhwebane’s resignation has not gone down well with Carl Niehaus in particular. The former African National Congress (ANC) veteran condemned Mkhwebane’s actions and wrote a scathing message to her on X. He also tagged for EFF Deputy President, Floyd Shivambu, who also jumped ship to the MK Party.
“@AdvBMkhwebane I am deeply disappointed in you. When that other betrayer, @FloydShivambu left the @EFFSouthAfrica you posted on X that, “I will never betray the fighters my political home”, and then barely a month later when you resigned, you denied that you are joining MK-Party, and now this! Your word is not your honour!” he said.
“You talk with a forked tongue. You used and abused the good will and support of the @EFFSouthAfrica, and our #CommanderInChief, President @Julius_S_Malema. It is also matter of public record how I supported you when you were persecuted and impeached. Now I feel like a bloody fool, and it is not a good feeling to feel used, lied to, and betrayed. This is now your legacy. Sies!” he added.

According to The Citizen, Niehaus has dispelled rumours that he will be leaving the party and said he did not want to entertain any such notions.
“Fighters, I don’t even want to hear the question, ‘Are you leaving?’ because it’s a stupid, useless question; I am going nowhere,” Niehaus said.
He was confident that the EFF would succeed as it had a sound ideology and believed there were not better leaders in any South African political party than in the EFF.
Oh, don’t you worry, I am crystal clear about my direction, and where I stand. No, I certainly don’t fight everyone. I only fight those who need to be fought. pic.twitter.com/OkLFoPANGb
