Cape Town – Tomorrow will mark exactly 10 years since the murder of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.
Meyiwa was killed at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, Gauteng, on the evening of 26 October 2024.
The murder shook the heart of the nation.
It took six years for arrests to be made for the murder and a total of eight years before the trial could begin.
All five accused have denied their involvement in the Meyiwa killing.
According to Daily Sun, witnesses in the house have claimed that Meyiwa was shot by two intruders.
The trial, which began in 2020, has been a roller coaster. with several postponements. In July 2023, Justice Ratha Mokgoatlheng, took over the trial from Judge Tshifiwa Maumela, after the latter fell ill.
The trial has again been postponed after counsel for one of the accused fell ill. It will be heard again on Monday, 28 October 2024.
In an interview with eNCA, Sinqobile Maphisa, the sister of one of the accused, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, says her brother is innocent, alleging a cover-up.
“My brother is confused about this and nothing pins him to the killing of Meyiwa,” she said.
