Cape Town — Anti-Gang Unit detectives are on the hunt for the gunmen who shot and killed five people during a shooting incident on Wednesday evening in Atlantis.
Atlantis, a small-town located 40km outside Cape Town on the West Coast, has a history of gang violence and Wednesday’s incident saw five killed and a further five injured. Police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said the incident happened when gunmen opened fire on three vehicles returning from the beach, a statement read.

“Reports from the scene indicate the victims of the shooting incident were returning home in three vehicles from the Silverstroom beach when yet-to-be identified gunmen opened fire on the vehicles on the corner of Old Mamre and Silverstream Roads,” Potelwa said.
“As a consequence five individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 were fatally wounded and five others rushed to a medical facility after sustaining gunshot wounds,” she added.
Police in Atlantis have opened murder and attempted murder dockets for investigation and will likely determine the motive for the shooting as the investigation continues. No arrests have been made yet.
