Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has described former minister Tito Mboweni as a great leader and respected figure in South Africa.
Mboweni, who passed away at 65 after a short illness, was the country’s first labour minister under president Nelson Mandela and the first black governor of the Reserve Bank.
Speaking in his eulogy at Mboweni’s funeral in Tzaneen, Limpopo, Ramaphosa highlighted Mboweni’s many roles, calling him a leader, mentor, and friend, known affectionately as “Comrade Tito” and “Uncle Tito”.

He praised Mboweni’s larger-than-life personality and the significant impact he had on many lives.
The president also said that Mboweni had a sharp focus on fiscal discipline and economic transformation during his service as governor and finance minister.
