Cape Town — Police have confirmed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Stellenbosch University student on Thursday.
Jesse Mitchell was a first-year BSc student who was tragically killed in a knife attack on his 19th birthday. The incident happened on Wednesday 16 October on Borcherd Street. He was found with a stab wound in his neck and was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to Western Cape provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, confirmed that a 19-year-old suspect was arrested, with a further three suspects arrested on Thursday, a police statement reported.
“Stellenbosch detectives’ intricate investigation, in collaboration with Crime Intelligence, led to the arrest of a 19-year-old male suspect within hours of the crime’s commission. He is scheduled to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 18, 2024,” Pojie said.
“Meanwhile, on Thursday, October 17, 2024, Stellenbosch Crime Prevention arrested three more suspects, two males aged 29 and 28 as well as a 31-year-old female in Cloetesville, Stellenbosch. They are scheduled to make their court appearance once charged,” Pojie said.

According to TimesLIVE, Mitchell’s family are devastated by their tragic loss. The family have described him as a “talented, creative and ambitious young man who was beloved by friends and family.”
Mitchell’s cousin, Bianca Jordaan, created a GoFundMe campaign in a bid to assist the family as they deal with funeral expenses.
“It is with a heavy heart to share the tragic news of Jesse’s passing. Jesse was a beloved friend, and family member, who was tragically killed on October 16 on his 19th birthday,” said Jordaan.
