Cape Town – The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says it is looking forward to the implementation of SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed broadband satellite system in South Africa.
Starlink, founded by South African-born Elon Musk, provides global internet access through its network of low-Earth orbit satellites, covering over 60 countries.
NSRI CEO Dr Cleeve Robertson has expressed enthusiasm about the South African government’s recent discussions with Starlink, highlighting the potential benefits for their service, especially for historically disadvantaged communities.
The satellite technology is expected to improve connectivity, safety, and socio-economic development, particularly in emergency response scenarios in remote areas.
“We are keenly interested in the recent South African government meetings with Starlink, recognising the opportunities it presents for our service and our beneficiary community, which is 98% historically disadvantaged,” Robertson said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently met with Musk in New York to discuss Starlink, encouraging him to invest further in South Africa.
Robertson said that Starlink’s internet service could significantly enhance NSRI’s emergency response capabilities, providing real-time communication that is crucial during natural disasters and rescue operations.
“Starlink’s satellite internet service will revolutionise our ability to respond to emergencies, especially in remote and underserved areas.
“The real-time communication capabilities will enhance our rescue operations and, by extension, the safety of all South Africans engaging in water-based activities. Reliable, high-speed internet access can be a game-changer for our volunteers and the lives they work tirelessly to save,” he said.
NSRI Operations Director Brett Ayres also spoke on the technology’s broader implications, saying: “Starlink’s technology will support our critical rescue operations and empower communities with access to educational, health, and economic resources that can uplift their quality of life. The connectivity it provides will bring enormous value to the entire country.”
Ayres further noted that: “Starlink’s services will have a significant multiplier effect across South Africa’s economy, not only in the rescue sector but also in supporting growth in all other sectors and industries.”
