Cape Town – A passenger train heading to Wellington derailed at Dal Josafat station in Paarl, Western Cape, on Tuesday evening, resulting in approximately 25 injuries and passengers trapped.
The Drakenstein Disaster Management Team initiated rescue operations while bystanders looked on in shock.
Emergency responders, including Drakenstein Farm Watch, swiftly mobilised following an urgent assistance request.
No fatalities were reported, and all trapped individuals were rescued, in said in a Facebook post.
The cause of the derailment remains unknown.
In response, Metrorail Western Cape transported injured passengers to nearby hospitals and suspended train services from Wellington to Kraaifontein.
“Other passengers onboard were transported home. At this stage, Prasa and TFR [Transnet Freight Rail] are investigating the incident. Prasa has reported it to the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), which is in line with existing protocols,” it said in a statement.

Investigations by Prasa and TFR are underway, with the Railway Safety Regulator notified accordingly.
