Cape Town — South African radio personality, Sol Phenduka, has given his comments on the topic of DJ Maphorisa and his contribution to the music industry.
Maphorisa has made headlines recently for not crediting Samthing Soweto on his hit song, Amalanga Awafani, and he took to social media to clear his name and explain why he made that decision, claiming he would bounce back from it. Just a few days later, he performed at the Galaxy Joburg Day to a sold-out crowd, claiming he had bounced back.
Maphorisa had also made comments about the amapiano genre, claiming that he saved the genre and helped many artists, including Kabza De Smaal (his running mate). He also mentioned Sol Phenduka, who set the record straight during an episode of the Podcast and Chill with MacG.
“No one is bigger than the music, Phori (Maphorisa) found the piano, he didn’t create it and the fact must be told. Whether Amapiano was gonna grow at its own pace, Kabza was making Amapiano already before Phori found him,” Phenduka said,
“He heard Kabza somewhere and his mind was blown, and then he worked and collaborated with him, so it’s bigger than him,” he added.
He added that Maphorisa is an old DJ who would play other people’s music, as the music was bigger than him. Phenduka said he would play Maphorisa’s songs because he was a good DJ because of his popularity as an artist.
“No one is bigger than the music. Phori probably has the biggest influence on piano, and kudos, we give him props for that,” he said.
