Cape Town — The African National Congress (ANC) has said that Minister of Justice, Thembi Simelane, will need to explain her involvement in the VBS Mutual Bank scandal to Parliament.
Simelane was implicated over her alleged involvement in the VBS Bank scandal during her tenure as Polokwane mayor.
It was alleged that she received a loan of more than R500 000 to fund her coffee shop, while she also negotiated R349 million in unlawful investments.
Lst week, former Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, urged against rushing the judgement against Simelane without any concrete proof and said all evidence should be made on admissible evidence.
Simelane is set to appear before the Justice Portfolio Committee on Friday 6 September to “present clarity on issues related to VBS”, a notice sent out by her department’s communications services said.

Speaking to eNCA, ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, said Simelane will face the party’s integrity commission to explain her role in the VBS matter, and the party will receive that report from her.
“We’ll get the report and than Thembi will have to go to the integrity commission. We are expecting a full report from her in terms of what has been reported. She has to report to the SG,” Mbalula said.
He added that she must also explain her part to the integrity commission and that President Ramaphosa is dealing with the matter at a government level.
“From the ANC, when the need arises that we need to take action, we will take action. The renewal agenda is rolling. We’ve got measures in place over how we deal about those particular issues.”
