African Decisions magaEni Coral Sul FLNG

Mozambique’s groundbreaking Coral South project is well on track. This follows the announcement that construction of the floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) treatment and liquefaction facility’s hull has been completed.

Weighing in at a considerable 140 000 tons and measuring 432m in length, the Coral Sul is Africa’s first purpose-built FLNG facility. According to project operator Eni, it will also be ‘the first FLNG ever deployed in deep waters, at depths of about 2 000m’. Furthermore, the Coral Sul will have an eight-storey high, 350-person accommodation component, and 12 gas treatment and LNG modules, with liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per annum.

The FLNG is destined for the Coral natural gas field. Discovered in 2012, the gas field is located in the Rovuma basin, off the coast of Mozambique, where water depths reach up to 2 300m.

The Coral South project is expected to produce 450 billion m3 of gas. Field development involves the drilling of six subsea wells, which is under way, with production beginning in 2022.
