Cape Town – EFF leader Julius Malema has accused security officers of “contaminating” the crime scene where party regional deputy secretary Moshe Mphahlele was killed in a crossfire during a protest in Bramley.
Malema visited the scene and criticised the officers for their presence, claiming they were hiding their faces and tampering with evidence.
“This thing of hiding faces must come to an end, [it] must be declared a crime. What if you are a criminal yourself, you are hiding your face? Hiding your face from what?,” Malema said.

He demanded that they leave the area and questioned their actions, alleging they were trying to cover up the incident.
Malema’s comments were made in the presence of EFF leaders and were shared on social media.
Earlier, Johannesburg’s MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, urged the South African Police Service (SAPS) to quickly investigate the shooting death of Mphahlele.
According to SABC, Mabaso highlighted confusion over whether the shots were fired by police, security, or the crowd and called for a swift resolution to clarify the circumstances and provide closure for Mphahlele’s family.
“It seems like no one knows what happened. We were informed that the shots came from the crowd but the crowd says it came from the police or the security and that’s where the confusion is.
“Hence, we requested that they expedite and prioritise this case so that we are able to understand who actually fired the shots. We are hoping police will do justice in this investigation so that the family is able to find closure,” the report quoted Mabaso as saying.
