Cape Town – Thirteen foreign nationals, aged 20 to 42, have been arrested for attacking South African Police Service (SAPS) officers during a drug raid in Mankweng on 16 July 2024.
The suspects face charges of attempted murder and assault, police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said in a statement.
“According to information, the officers were busy with investigation to trace suspects dealing in drugs when they got ambushed by a group of suspects who threw stones and assaulted them.
“During the incident, some officers sustained injuries.
“They were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The suspects managed to evade arrest,” Ledwaba said.
The suspects were later apprehended on 30 July 2024 by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit and Tactical Response Team in Unit F, Mankweng.
The suspects are set to appear in Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on 31 July 2024 facing charges of attempted murder and assault with grievous bodily harm.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the attack.
“We will not tolerate such brazen acts of violence against our police officers. The suspects will face the full might of the law,” said Hadebe.
