Cape Town – The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has praised the appointment of Justice Mandisa Maya as the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.
Maya marks a historic milestone as she will be the first woman to hold the position.
The CGE said that this appointment, effective from September 1, 2024, represents significant progress toward gender equality in the judiciary.
“This historic appointment of Justice Maya as the first woman in this position will serve as an inspiration that gender equality and equity can be achieved through a concerted effort,” the CGE said in a statement on Friday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Maya’s appointment following consultations with the Judicial Service Commission and political leaders.
The CGE noted that Maya’s leadership and this appointment are crucial steps towards addressing gender imbalances in the judiciary and inspiring more women to pursue senior judicial roles.
In 2016, the CGE published a report called “Gender Transformation in the Judiciary.”
“The findings of this report decried amongst others lack gender transformation in the judiciary. The CGE believes that Justice Maya has over the years displayed strong leadership qualities since she became a member of the bench, and this will serve as a catalyst for her to do exceptionally well.
“The CGE believes that the Commission’s report on transformation in the judiciary has decried lack of gender transformation in the judiciary, and this appointment is the first step in addressing that imbalance.”
