Cape Town – ANC veteran Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi has said that South Africa is in a political crisis after no party won a majority in the recent election, reflecting a decline in voter turnout and diminishing faith in democracy.
Fraser-Moleketi said this during a press conference held by leading foundations, including the Thabo Mbeki and Steve Biko Foundationsto announce plans for a national dialogue to address these issues.
“The results produced by the 2024 elections call upon us to reflect on the South Africa we want for the future and our children.
“What was set out when the democratic dispensation was established and the Constitution was adopted has not been achieved. I think we all agreed that there’s a lot more work to be done.
“We started that with great enthusiasm and we made gains, but we have also lost some of those gains in recent years,” the ANC veteran continued,” she said.
Fraser-Moleketi emphasised the need for reflection on past shortcomings and the importance of an inclusive dialogue.
Steve Biko Foundation CEO Nkosinathi Biko highlighted the urgency, describing South Africa as a “ticking time bomb” needing immediate attention to restore democracy and hope.
