Cape Town – Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille has defended the party’s decision to form a government with the African National Congress (ANC), saying it was the best option for South Africans.
This Government of National Unity agreement, signed on Friday, will see DA and ANC members occupying ministerial positions in the 7th administration.
According to EWN, Zille emphasised the party’s commitment to preventing a coalition of the ANC, uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK), and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which she believed would be detrimental to the country’s future.
“The overriding promise that we made for South Africans was that we would prevent a doomsday coalition as we called it, if we let a coalition of the ANC, MK [uMkhonto weSizwe Party] and EFF [Economic Freedom Fighters] go into government it would really burn our hopes and dreams and that is what we promised South Africa we would prevent,” the report quoted Zille as saying on 702.
Signatures from the Inkatha Freedom Party, Patriotic Alliance, and other parties are still pending, the report said.
Zille also said that her party would not support a motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We will only support the impeachment if the evidence suggests there should be an impeachment, but I don’t think we are now in a position, given the fact that we have signed the statement of intent, to start impeaching a president we have just voted for,” she said.
