Sudan – A village in Sudan had been attacked by paramilitary forces, as reported by a Sudanese pro-democracy activists’ committee. This had occurred amidst the United Nations warning of mass displacement and starvation.
As reported by the Madani Resistance Committee, the central village of Wad al-Noura in al-Jazira state, had been attacked in two waves with heavy artillery, by The Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF have been at war with the regular army since April 2023.
The committee said on Wednesday that the feared paramilitaries invaded the village, causing dozens of casualties and widespread displacement. Additionally stating, “we were waiting for a confirmed toll of the dead and injured.”

On social media, the group shared footage of what they described to be a “mass grave” located in the public square, showing many rows of white burial garments in a courtyard.
The wars death toll remains unclear but what’s certain, is that in over a year, the war has killed over thousands of people, including up to 15,000 in a single West Darfar town.
The RSF have repeatedly attacked and besieged entire villages across the country, and have been known for their widespread looting and sexual/ethnic violence. The army and RSF alike, have been accused of various war crimes, including the targeting civilians, looting, obstructing humanitarian aid and indiscriminately shelling residential areas.
Looming Famine
Since the war began, over 7 million people have fled their homes for other parts of Sudan. This total adds to 2.8 million already displaced from previous conflicts in the country. In response to this, the International Organization for Migration said in a statement, “The worlds worst internal displacement crises continues to escalate with looming famine and disease adding to the havoc wrought by conflict.”
Widespread hunger has haunted Sudan for months, with the UN stating that 18 million people are acutely hungry, with 3.6 million children acutely malnourished. If the current humanitarian situation continues to persists, 2.5 million people could die of hunger by the end of September, according to recent estimates by the Clingendael Institute. The institute further stated that the figure totals to “15 percent” of the Darfar and Kordofan population- the western and southern regions that have experienced the worst fighting.
