Nigeria plans to begin fully restoring three of its state-owned oil refineries as of early next year.

Despite numerous setbacks, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) hopes to commence restoration of its refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna in January 2020, according to Reuters.

‘We will do everything possible between October and December to close out all necessary conditions for us to deliver on that project,’ says NNPC’s public affairs general manager Ndu Ughamadu.

The refineries have previously operated far below their 445 000 barrel-per-day-capacity due to neglect, mismanagement and a lack of crude, prompting the oil-producing nation to rely on imported fuel.

If all goes according to plan, the refineries will be fully operational by 2022.
