Cape Town — The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has praised Eskom for its recent efforts, as the power utility has kept load shedding away for two months.
Speaking at the Enlit Africa Conference in Cape Town, the Department, Eskom and other role players in the energy sector, came together to discuss plans for the future of energy and water security. The DMRE praised Eskom for it’s work and highlighted the progress made by the Energy Action Plan.
“On behalf of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, I want to take this opportunity to commend the Eskom team and leadership for the great work they are doing in this area. I’m not going to ask what you are doing, but I’m going to say keep on doing what you’re doing because it seems to be working and solving the problem. Progress is also being made in other areas of the Energy Action Plan such as fast-tracking the procurement of new generation capacity.” the DMRE Director General, Jacob Mbele, said.

According to SABC News, Eskom said it will increase the generation capacity at various power stations in coming months, including Medupi and Koeberg, in an effort to ramp up generation by the end of December.
The power utility says it’s also looking to build on the progress made in addressing load shedding, with management saying it is working hard to build confidence. The Generation Operational Recovery Plan is the reason for the improvement in reliability.
Electricity Minister, Kgotsientso Ramokgopa, said he expects President Ramaphosa to sign the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill into law before the elections, which would officially mark the end of Eskom’s 100-year monopoly.
Ramokgopa says the Bill will formalise measures to open the market up for competitive trading.
