Cape Town — Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, John Steenhuisen, has defended the party’s controversial TV advert that trended across social media this week.
The DA uploaded a highly-publicised and controversial advert predicting the African National Congress’s (ANC) downfall ahead of the upcoming elections, as well as highlighting the “disastrous” coalition between the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK).
🚨 This election is about survival! Watch the DA’s new TV advert. Your vote can stop a corrupt coalition between the ANC, the violent EFF and the Zuma faction.

In response, Steenhuisen remained defiant over the advertm saying the burning of the flag is “symbolic” of the doomsday coalition of the ANC and the EFF, IOL reported.
“What you will see in this advertisement is a symbolic representation of the future that awaits South Africa if people do not vote for the DA,” he said.
Steenhuisen added that the ANC will lose its majority vote and will be looking to work with parties to subject the country to further corruption and destriction.
“After May 29, South Africans will be governed by either the doomsday coalition between the ANC and the EFF and possibly MKP as well as many smaller parties outside of the Multi-Party Charter, or by the new Multi-Party Charter government with the DA fulfilling its role as a strong anchor party based on its size and our track record of good governance,” he said.

DA federal chairperson, Helen Zille, also defended the advert and said the party was trying to depict a message of what would happen to the country should voters not vote for the DA.
“If a person is drowning you hope to rescue them, if someone has fallen in a very big dark pit you try to rescue them. The alternative to being rescued is dying, and that is the message we are trying to get across to South Africa,” DA federal chairperson Helen Zille said when defending the advert.
She added that the clock is ticking on saving South Africa and said the party already “rescued” the Western Cape in 2009 and hopes to do the same to other provinces.
The alternative to being rescued is dying, that’s the point! 🇿🇦
