Cape Town – The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is finalising preparations for 78,092 South African citizens who applied to cast their special vote abroad.
Collaborating with the Department of International Cooperation and Cooperation (DIRCO), the IEC has started shipping voting materials to 111 foreign missions, including voting booths, ballot boxes, stationery packs, and lists.
Voting will occur on May 17 in certain missions and May 18 in others.
The voting stations will operate from 7 am to 7 pm, accommodating the registered voters for the 2024 National Elections.
Extended voting hours are arranged for missions with a large number of registered voters, including London, Washington DC, and New York.
“After the voting process, cast national compensatory ballots will be transported through a source channel back to the national office of the Electoral Commission for counting. The votes will be counted in the presence of agents presenting contestants,” the IEC said.
However, voting is not feasible in some countries due to security concerns, leading to the closure of missions in Sudan, Tel Aviv, and Kyiv.
The IEC will provide extended hours on both voting days abroad to assist voters with queries.
