Cape Town – A 53-year-old police sergeant in East London has been sentenced to an effective 30 years in prison for raping his stepdaughter repeatedly between 2018 and 2021.
According to Times Live, the high court in East London also sentenced the sergeant’s wife, a 36-year-old constable and the child’s biological mother, to either five years’ imprisonment or a R5 000 fine for failing to report the rapes after her child disclosed them to her.
The assaults began when the victim was 13.
“Ipid investigations revealed that the mother of the complainant was informed by the complainant of these acts, but she failed to report them to the authorities, or remove the complainant from the house,” The Citizen quoted Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) Spokesperson Phaladi Shuping as saying.
The man received 25 years for rape and an additional five-year sentence for two counts of sexual assault, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
The man was apprehended after the case was reported to the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (Ipid).
Ipid said in a statement that it “applauded the complainant’s aunt who assisted her in opening a case and helping her through the court process, as well as the investigating officer and the prosecutor in ensuring justice for the complainant”.
