Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula for her decision to resign amid corruption allegations.
Mapisa-Nqakula stepped down from her parliamentary position due to accusations of bribery and fraud amounting to over R4 million during her tenure as Defense Minister.
Ramaphosa commended her integrity and described her resignation as a commendable move for democracy.

“We should recognise that her level of integrity for our democracy has made her do this. That should be commended, it should be applauded and that’s what it is,” the president said.
Mapisa-Nqakula denies allegations of interfering with tender processes and receiving kickbacks from a defence contractor.
Her lawyer argues that evidence supporting the charges is lacking and relies on media reports.
The case has been postponed to June 4th.
