Cape Town — The Presidency has called on South African to condemn the individuals and political parties who have threatened violence over the 2024 elections.
Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, responded to the threats by the MK party that it would threaten violence if the party was not on the 2-24 election ballots. Magwenya said that destabilising the elections would be tantamount to undermining the country’s democracy, SABC News reported.
“The elections are an important milestone in any democratic calendar and they should be observed in accordance to the established rules. They should be observed in a manner that respects everyone’s rights to participate so as the President has said anyone who seeks to threaten the stability of these elections will be dealt with by law enforcement agencies, who are attending to detailed plans to ensure that we have safe elections” Magwenya said.
According to EWN, Magwenya said law enforcement agencies would be hard at work to ensure that there would be no violence at the upcoming elections. He also said the DA’s letter to the US as a clumsy PR stunt.
“That preparation includes preparing for all possible scenarios that could arise in any part of the country. That includes Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN).” he said.
“We have a wonderful history of holding free and fair elections, and in some cases better than some of the countries the DA has approached.” he added.
He said President Cyril Ramaphosa viewed last week’s leak of African National Congress (ANC) candidate lists from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) as an isolated incident, with no bearing on the overall integrity of the electoral system.
