Durban — Residents and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took the streets in Durban CBD to protest against the poor service delivery across the metro.
Residents from the Thokoza Thokoza Hostel and neighbouring flats on Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street burnt tyres and uncollected waste, in protest of the ongoing eThekwini municipal workers strike. Their building has been without electricity for more than week, IOL reported.
An anonymous resident confirmed the electricity has been off for eight days and the women have been abused there. They have lost a lot of food meaning they cannot feed the children there. She also said the hostel also had a water outage and they believed that the issue may be due to municipal workers’ strike, believing they put the water off on purpose.
Rubbish is piling up across Durban as an illegal strike by municipal workers continues for more than two weeks. SAMWU members are demanding pay parity with Ekurhuleni municipal workers. Newzroom Afrika’s @nobuhlemodise reports.

According to The Witness, Durban Metro Police once again opened the roads up after police had cleared the protestors and the affected roads from debris, spokesperson, Boysie Zungu, said.
“We are maintaining visible policing and monitoring in this vicinity. CTV cameras and police monitoring. There have been no problems so far,” he said.
eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said any further updates on the strike will only be communicated on Wednesday at a media briefing they plan to have.
In solidarity with the hostel residents, The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also took to the streets to protest against the poor service delivery in the metro and surrounding areas. The chants of struggle songs outside the Durban City Hall marked the start of the EFF’s service delivery protest, EWN reported.
The party’s labour desk and some of its provincial and metro leaders are currently locked in a meeting with eThekwini officials in the city hall.
Several people were arrested today after a service delivery protest turned violent in Durban. This comes amid an ongoing wage strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union. @Karinda_J has more.
