CapeTown – The State is opposing a bid by State Capture accused Anoj Singh to have his bail conditions relaxed.
Singh, the former Eskom and Transnet chief financial officer accused with the Gupta brothers in the R400 million Transnet tender fraud case, wants his passport returned so he can accept a permanent job in the United Arab Emirates, reports News24.
Singh, who was arrested in 2022 and faces 25 charges of fraud, is out on bail of R50 000. One of the bail conditions was that he relinquish his passport.
He is arguing that he needs his passport as he has been offered a permanent job in the UAE as CEO of Buy4Rich, according to IOL.
The State, meanwhile, argued in Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday that the UAE had previously displayed a lack of cooperation in extradition proceedings and that there was a possibility that Singh would abscond.
South Africa failed in April last year in its attempts to have brothers Atul and Rajesh Gupta extradited from the UAE.
In its opposition to Singh’s application, the State also argued that the conditions suggested by Singh in return for the relaxation of his bail conditions were impractical.
Singh proposed that he would communicate via Zoom with the police investigating officer; that he would return to South Africa for a specific period; and that he would sign an agreement not to oppose any extradition application brought by the South African government.
