Cape Town – The Department of Correctional Services has launched a manhunt for Clatta Gumbo, a prisoner who reportedly escaped from Mamelodi regional hospital in Tshwane.
According to The Citizen, Gumbo, serving a life sentence for rape, kidnapping, and assault, attacked and disarmed a guarding official during a scheduled visit to consult a dietitian.
“Admitted as an offender on 28 August 2018, Gumbo is serving a life sentence for rape, kidnapping and assault at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre in Tshwane. He was escorted to the hospital for a consultation with a Dietician when he attacked the guarding official, disarmed him and escaped from the hospital premises, the reported quoted Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo as saying.

An immediate action was taken to initiate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape, Times Live reported.
“Correctional services is appealing to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the escapee to contact their nearest correctional facility or police station.
“The department is working with other law enforcement agencies to conduct a widespread search operation to locate and apprehend the offender.
“Public safety is our utmost priority and every effort is being made to effect a rearrest of Gumbo,” said Nxumalo.
