Cape Town — Following the conclusion of the final voters registration weekend on 3 and 4 February, the Independent Electoral Commission(IEC) has thanked all the South Africans who registered to vote in the 2024 elections.
IEC chairperson, Mosotho Moepya, thanked more than 500 000 people visited voting stations to register to vote for the upcoming elections.
He said that 99% of voting stations opened on time, adding, however, that there were minor problems in some communities, SABC News reported.
“A total of six communities were protesting and in those areas, our stations remained open although intermittently. We want to say to South Africans, if you want to express your grievances by all means our Constitution permits, but it must not have an impact on others,” Moepya said.
As reported by IOL, the IEC continued to see an increase in the number of people who registered at voting stations, and added that even more people registered to vote using their online platform. On Saturday, more than 67 000 voters registered on their online platform, while a further 34 000 people were recorded on Sunday.
On Sunday, the commission recorded 67 200 online registration transactions. Today the figure of online registrations stands at 34,293. We urge voters whose access to our online facility is delayed by high traffic to be patient.” the IEC said.
According to eNCA, over 33 000 people took advantage of the its extended hours to register to vote. More than 23 000 people collected their Identity Documents (ID) at Hoem Affairs, while 9 000 – consisting mostly of first-time applicants – came to collect their IDs. A further 1 000 people came to collect temporary IDs.
The IEC says it’s pleased with the turnout during their voter registration drive this weekend. Political Analyst Sandile Swana speaks to @N_Ayanda about how voter registration has fared, particularly about young people.
