Cape Town — DA leader, John Steenhuisen, has refuted claims that his party is a white party, following suggestions that the DA has been axing black party leaders.
As the party prepares its election campaign ahead of the 2024 general elections, Steenhuisen has had to deal with questions regarding the mass exodus of black leaders, as the party boasts cultural diversity within the organisation, EWN reported.
Former party members such as Mmusi Maimane, Mbali Ntuli, and Makashule Gana have resigned from the DA, with Khume Ramulifho the latest to leave the party.
Steenhuisen said the departure of black members from the party had nothing to do with the colour of their skin.
“It’s silly season now in politics. You’re going to see a lot of jumping around between parties. The Democratic Alliance is not a white party. Yes, we’ve got white members, but we’re not a white party,” he said adamantly
Steenhuisen, who participated in a virtual Q&A to answer questions from the public, gave an insight into the work he does in Parliament, and what the party’s plans are for the upcoming elections. Among the topics discussed included the electricity crisis, failing infrastructure, giving more opportunities to the previously disadvantaged, as well as opening arms to foreign nationals into the country.
