Johannesburg — The ANC in Gauteng says it will do everything in its power to address issues plaguing the province ahead of the 2024 general elections, as it prepare the election campaign.
ANC Gauteng Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, has committed to offering more young people jobs, and installing transformers for Soweto residents. Lesufi was speaking at an ANC volunteers weekend in Orlando, Soweto.
The party says it will, among the issues, employ 35 000 young young people to help at schools, fund tuition for the top performers in the province, and it will also employ 3 000 former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) veterans to combat crime in the province.

Lesufi spoke about the 35 000 young people employed by the national government as teacher assistants at schools during the height of Covid-19, whose contracts ended in October 2023, TimesLIVE wrote.
“The first one, as the Gauteng provincial government from the 1st February, we will start to employ people so that we do not have young people that are unemployed in our province. We are saying to the 35 000 young people in Gauteng on the 1st February to go back to our schools, we are taking care of you as Gauteng,” he said.
According to EWN, It is believed that the birth of Jacob Zuma’s new MK party has given the ex-combatants a new lease on life, with their presence forming a an important part of ANC activities during the weekend.
All combatants of uMkhonto weSizwe, don’t go that side, come this side. On the 5th of February, we want to take you to train you, to come and work and fight crime in Gauteng,” Lesufi said.
As the ANC cranks up its election machinery, Lesufi is planning to use the next few months to dish out jobs, install transformers in Soweto, and to fund further studies for Gauteng’s top matriculants – all of which form part of the governing party’s elections campaign.
