Cape Town — Following a two-month recess in the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, his murder trial is set to continue in the Pretoria High Court on Monday morning.
In November 2023, it was announced that the murder trial would be postponed to January 2024 after one of the defence advocates had complained about not feeling well and needing medical attention, IOL reported.
All five men accused of Meyiwa’s murder will take their place on the bench of the Pretoria High Court where the trial will resume from where it stopped in November. Currently, the trial is in a process of what’s called a “trial within a trial” where the admissibility of confession statements by two of the accused is being determined, EWN reported.
According to SABC News, Police Investigating Officer Brigadier Bongani Gininda is expected back on the stand. Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, has asked for the postponement of the trial last year, and Mngomezulu revisited the issue of the warrant of arrest for accused 1, Muzi Sibiya, to the objection of the state.
Before the long adjournment, Mngomezulu was also given time to sort out his papers for cross-examination after he referred Gininda to something that did not appear on the document he had handed over to the witness.
ENCA reported that the court is trying to determine whether those confessions can be used as evidence in the main trial, The state is expected to call two more witnesses before wrapping up its case but it remains to be seen who the defence will call as it is set to present its case afterwards.
