Cape Town – Political parties in South Africa are gearing up for the upcoming elections, with the Electoral Commission (IEC) providing funds to parties represented in Parliament.
The R5 million from the Multi-Party Democracy Fund is distributed among 13 parties, with the ANC receiving the largest share.
The funds cover the first three months of the year, aiding parties as they prepare for the elections.
Rise Mzansi, a new political party not in Parliament, is expected to be the first to launch its manifesto, followed by launches from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), EWN reported.
The ANC plans to officially launch its manifesto on February 24, with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) launching on March 10, the report said.
Meanwhile, according to IOL, the final voter registration weekend for the national general elections will be conducted by the Electoral Commission of South Africa on February 3 to 4.
Sy Mamabolo, the chief electoral officer of the IEC, said that the registration weekend in November witnessed success, attracting tens of thousands of new registrations.
“We think there are a lot more out there who have yet to be registered and this is an additional opportunity for them to enlist on the voters roll.
“On 3 and 4 February over 22 000 voting stations will open on both days and operate between 8am and 5pm,” the report quoted Mamabolo as saying.
