Cape Town — The woman dubbed ‘The Insurance Killer’ — Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho — appeared in court again after she was alleged to have killed family members to receive a large payout from their insurances.
It was alleged that Setshwantsho had taken out policies for over 40 family members, and she was arrested in November by both police and the insurance company in a joint operation. Police are also investigating her husband, two daughters, and son’s mysterious deaths, eNCA reported.
Setshwantsho said that the conditions of her detention and her poor health meant she was eligible for bail. In her founding affidavit, she argued that she was deprived of her diabetes medication for many weeks during her arrest, according to EWN.

According to her lawyer, Nhlanhla Mahlangu, the fact that the Department of Correctional Services needed to go to Bophelong Hospital to stock up on her medication shows that they cannot provide what she needs.
Mahlangu also pointed out the strict conditions surrounding Stehswantsho’s visitors, which included her lawyers, meant it made things difficult for her to prepare her defence adequately and by extension, her right to a fair trial.
Mahlangu believes those circumstances were exceptional, which was a requirement for bail. The bail hearing will continue on Monday.
